BIOGRAPHY

Matt assists clients with a wide variety of matters related to energy and natural resources law. His practice is focused on representing landowners and upstream oil gas operators in oil and gas related matters including participation and exploration agreements, financing transactions, mineral title examination, drafting instruments affecting real property interests, oil and gas lease negotiation and land management issues. Additionally, Matt advises clients with farm and ranch sales and issues affecting operators and non-operators in oil and gas transactions and is the President Emeritus of the San Antonio Association of Professional Landmen.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Crowell served as Law Clerk for the Honorable Bob Pemberton, Third Court of Appeals, Austin, Texas in 2007 and as a Congressional Intern in the office of Congressman Charles W. Stenholm, 17th District of Texas in 2001. Matt helps manage his families’ Llano County ranch which has been in his family for seven generations.

EXPERIENCE

Matt has also assisted clients with a wide variety of business related legal matters, including:

  • Represented landowner and operator clients in all aspects of land management including lease negotiations, pooling agreements, royalty reviews, pipeline and utility easements, surface use agreements and real property sales.
  • Represented client in successful settlement of business dispute involving multiple salt water disposal wells and reclamation sites in Eagle Ford Shale and Permian Basin.
  • Coordinated sales of farm and ranch properties representing both buyers and sellers.
  • Prepared title opinions covering oil and gas properties throughout Texas.
  • Assisted non-operator client in sale of producing oil and gas properties.
  • Represented landowner in contribution of significant oil and gas producing assets into family limited partnership.
  • Routinely counsels clients regarding participation agreements, joint operating agreements and supporting documentation.
  • Represented lenders in financing transactions secured by producing oil and gas properties.
  • Represented landowner client in highly lucrative leasing transaction covering over 50,000 acres in Eagle Ford Shale.
  • Represented oil and gas operator in farm-out of several thousand acres in Austin Chalk.
  • Obtained multi-million dollar summary judgment for Eagle Ford royalty owner client in McMullen County, Texas. The district court issued a declaration in client’s favor and entered a “take-nothing judgment” on plaintiff’s declaratory judgment claims.
  • Advised clients in mineral title disputes.
